Exciting Workshop at the Technology Center!

On July 8, 2024, another exciting seminar was held at the Technology Center, this time on the topic “Molecular Enzymology.” The event featured special participation by Prof. Pierre Monsan, a renowned French biochemist, entrepreneur, Doctor Honoris Causa of Plovdiv University, honorary professor at the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Toulouse, and director of the pre-industrial demonstrator Toulouse White Biotechnology.

The event was opened by Prof. Ilia Iliev, Director of the Technology Center, who welcomed all participants and emphasized the importance of scientific research in the field of molecular enzymology. Dr. Stanimira Angelova also presented her research on the topic, sharing interesting discoveries and progress in the field.

The event concluded with lively discussions, where participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas and ask questions. We thank everyone who joined and made this workshop unforgettable!

Forum "Science for Business"

On June 11, 2024, the fourth edition of the exciting forum “Science for Business” took place at the Inter Expo Center in Sofia. The event, organized by the Executive Agency for Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (BSMEPA) and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), brought together leading minds from science and business.

Among the guests was Professor Ilia Iliev, Director of the Technology Center. The forum showcased successful examples of partnerships between business and BAS, demonstrating how joint projects lead to innovative and practical solutions already established in the market.

The event emphasized the importance of scientific research in increasing the productivity and competitiveness of the Bulgarian economy. Attendees learned about the innovative projects of BAS institutes and laboratories and the opportunities for future collaborations.

At the end of the forum, bilateral meetings were held in an informal setting, creating excellent conditions for idea exchange and the establishment of new partnerships.

Exciting Workshop at the Technology Center!

On June 6, 2024, at the Technology Center of Plovdiv University “Paisii Hilendarski,” a scientific seminar on “Biosensors and Biotechnologies” was held by the Chemo-Enzyme Catalysis team as part of the DUEkoS project. The event featured scientists from the Polish Academy of Sciences, renowned in biosensors in Poland and Ukraine:

  • Natalia Stasyuk, PhD in Chemistry and Doctor of Science in Biology. Dr. Stasyuk works at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
  • Olga Demkiv, PhD in Biochemistry. Dr. Demkiv works at the Institute of Cell Biology of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

The event attracted colleagues from the DUEkoS project, PhD students, and students interested in the exciting and rapidly developing field of biosensors and biotechnologies.

The workshop program was filled with inspiring lectures and in-depth discussions. After the event, participants engaged in lively discussions, exchanging ideas, and asking questions to the speakers.

Final Event for the Presentation of Centers of Excellence and Competence

On June 4, 2024, the final event for the presentation of the centers established under the OPSEIG 2014-2020 took place in the conference hall of the GATE Center of Excellence – Lozenets Campus of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski.”

Organized by the Executive Agency “Education Program,” this event aimed to promote the newly built infrastructure and demonstrate the opportunities it provides for developing knowledge and skills that meet the contemporary challenges of the labor market.

Among the official guests was Professor Ilia Iliev, Director of the Technology Center at Plovdiv University “Paisii Hilendarski,” who participated in the panel “Industry for Healthy Living and Biotechnologies.” Professor Iliev presented the Center of Competence “Personalized Innovative Medicine (PERIMED),” demonstrating how modern scientific research can be transformed into practical solutions for healthy living.

The event brought together leading scientists, business representatives, and local authorities who discussed the possibilities for cooperation and the development of young scientists in Bulgaria. The newly built infrastructure, funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the national budget, is crucial for achieving high results in scientific research and technological development.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR SCIENTISTS FROM PLOVDIV UNIVERSITY FOR INNOVATIONS IN THE FIELD OF NEW BIOMATERIALS AND BIOSENSORS AT TAIWAN INNOTECH EXPO /SEPTEMBER 2019/

From September 26 to 28, 2019, the annual international innovation and technology exhibition – Taiwan Innotech Expo – took place in Taipei, Taiwan, at the World Trade Center building.

The hosts and organizers of this event were the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Education, the Council of Agriculture, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI).

Innovations from around 600 exhibitors, representing various universities, research institutes, companies, and intellectual property associations, were presented. Corporate innovations – products and technologies – were showcased by Nissan, Microsoft, Merck, and others.

The expo was attended by over 45,000 visitors.

The areas of innovative research and products can be listed as follows:

PU “Paisii Hilendarski” received an official invitation to participate in Taiwan Innotech Expo from the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and was supported for this participation by “IP CONSULTING” Ltd., which helped Bulgaria organize its own pavilion at the expo.

The Director of the Technology Center at PU, Professor Dr. Ilia Iliev, presented 4 innovations from different PU teams that are patented:

  1. Instrument for determining the internal resistance and voltage of a battery – Authors: Nevena Mileva, Sotir Sotirov, Sergei Milev, and Mikhail Milev
  2. Bio-electro-chemical method for quantitative analysis of L-ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) – Authors: Nina Dimcheva, Elena Khorozova, Totka Dodevska
  3. Obtaining water-insoluble glycan by transglycosylation enzyme reaction – Authors: Ilia Iliev, Tonka Vasileva, Veselin Bivolarski, Temenuzhka Yovcheva, Maria Mavrudova, Asiya Viraneva, Ivan Bodurov
  4. Universal laser microrefractometer – Authors: Ivan Bodurov, Temenuzhka Yovcheva, and Simeon Sainov

Two of the innovations – mentioned in the sections above (2) and (3) – were selected to participate in the expo’s Science Competition in the fields of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Medicine and were presented by Professor Dr. Ilia Iliev.

At the official ceremony held on September 28, 2019, the innovation of the team led by Professor Dr. Ilia Iliev was awarded a Gold Medal and Certificate, and the innovation of the team led by Associate Professor Dr. Nina Dimcheva was awarded a Bronze Medal and Certificate.

The two innovations are part of the long-term joint R&D work of the teams; part of the research is funded by PU’s research and development funds.

The authors of the innovations are members of the R&D team of the PERIMED project – Personalized Innovative Medicine project. The authors are also members of teams working in the following PERIMED work packages:

  • Work Package № 6: Molecular biomarkers of gastrointestinal microbiota
  • Work Package № 10: Biocatalysts and natural biologically active substances
  • Work Package № 11: Biopolymers and new materials
  • Work Package № 12: Biosensors

The conducted research is part of the Research and Development Program of the Center and will serve as a basis for developing technologies for extracting new biomaterials and biosensors and incorporating them into new products.

Event – July 01, 2019 /Monday/ PERIMED – Construction & Building Modernization at the University of Plovdiv

The Director of the Centre of Technologies – Prof. Iliya Iliev and the Expert in “Bioeconomy” of the Centre of Technologies – Assoc. Prof. Atanas Vladikov participated on “July Morning” on the official ceremony of “First Sod” for construction and building modernization at the University of Plovdiv in relation to prompt execution of the National Project – Center of Competence – PERIMED.

The leading organization is the Medical University of Plovdiv and the other are the University of Plovdiv, and the Institute of Mineralogy and Crystallography of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

The event was hosted by the University of Plovdiv at 21 “Kostaki Peev” Street, where the Deputy-Rector of the Medical University of Plovdiv – Prof. Mariana Murdzheva, PhD, the University of Plovdiv – Prof. T. Yovcheva, PhD, and the Director of the Centre of Technologies – Prof. Iliya Iliev were the officials in the Ceremony.

  • Mariana Murdzheva, PhD is the Head Coordinator of the PERIMED-Project.
  • T. Yovcheva, PhD is also the Head of one of the PERIMED Laboratories: Biopolymers & New Materials Lab
  • Iliya Iliev, PhD is also the Head of one of the PERIMED Laboratories: Molecular Biomarkers of the Microbiota of the Gastro-Intestinal Tract

Event – June 28, 2019 /Friday/ BNAEOPC – 20 YEARS Bulgarian National Association – Essential Oils, Perfumery, and Cosmetics

The Director of the Centre of Technologies – Prof. Ilia Iliev and the Expert in “Bioeconomy” of the Centre of Technologies – Assoc. Prof. Atanas Vladikov were invited to participate at the 20 Years Anniversary of the Bulgarian National Association – Essential Oils, Perfumery, and Cosmetics (BNAEOPC).           

The event took place on June 28th, 2019 /Friday/ at the Grand Ball of the 9th Floor of Imperial Hotel, Plovdiv.

The event was populated by high-profile guests from Ministries, Agencies, and other official Bulgarian Institutions, many business representatives, representatives from different Universities, as well as numerous guests.

The host of the event, the BNAEOPC arranged for its 20 YEARS ANNIVERSARY an outstanding modern and folklore program, official salutations, many speeches, and award ceremony in different categories of achievements.

Assoc. Prof. Atanas I. Vladikov, PhD delivered official greetings to the BNAEOPC and handed on the behalf of the Centre of Technologies, the University of Plovdiv a special hand-made plastic of the Bulgarian Snowdrop to the Chairman – Mr. Deyan Todorov.

Event – June 07, 2019 /Friday/ ENRICH – European Network of Research and Innovation Centres and Hubs, Information Day & Training Session in Plovdiv, Bulgaria

The Director of the Centre of Technologies – Prof. Ilia Iliev and the Expert in “Bioeconomy” of the Centre of Technologies – Assoc. Prof. Atanas Vladikov participated in a one-day Information Day & Training Session of the ENRICH.

The event was hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Plovdiv (CCIP) on June 7th, 2019 /Friday/ at the Business Hall of the CCIP.

The panelists presented the goals and services of ENRICH, as well as the possibilities for partnerships among R&D Centres in EU, USA, and Brazil.

In this ENRICH Information Day & Training Session numerous fruitful talks were produced and exchange of many ideas for R&D partnerships were generated.

The Director of the Centre of Technologies – Prof. Ilia Iliev and the Expert in “Bioeconomy” of the Centre of Technologies – Assoc. Prof. Atanas Vladikov participated in the Official Ceremony of the Academic Provost Commencement of the New Provost (Rector) of the University of Plovdiv – Prof. Roumen Mladenov, PhD.

The event was organized by the University of Plovdiv on May 24th, 2019 – the Education, Culture and Slavonic Literature Day in Bulgaria, known also as the Day of the Cyrillic Alphabet, which many Slavonic nations, including Bulgaria use nowadays.

The event took place at the Central Entrance of the University of Plovdiv and the Ceremony included official salutations, speeches, cultural program and handing of the University Key & Flag, as well as Rector’s regalia from Prof. Zapryan Kozludzhov, PhD (Provost: 2011-2015, 2015-2019) to the newly elected Provost of the University of Plovdiv – Prof. Roumen Mladenov, PhD (2019-2022).
